Empire Southwest, Safe Lites™ Partner for Jobsite Safety
August 24th, 2005

Minneapolis & Phoenix – Wednesday, August 24, 2005 … In an effort to increase jobsite safety, Caterpillar® dealer Empire Southwest and Safe Lites, LLC, maker of GlowSkin™ active-illumination technology, have partnered to provide Safe Lites products to southwestern construction and mining operations; airports; law enforcement agencies and other industries where visibility and safety are priorities. Under the agreement, Empire will place GlowSkin products on the machinery it sells and services and will carry Safe Lites safety apparel and signs in all 11 of its retail parts stores.

GlowSkin, a luminescent product that can be sewn into apparel and applied directly to machines and vehicles, greatly increases visibility in all lighting conditions. It was developed to help reduce the frequency and severity of jobsite crashes, which nationally number over 100,000 per year and result in more than 40,000 injuries and 1,000 fatalities*.

“Caterpillar dealers represent an ideal fit for Safe Lites because of the high value of service they provide to their customers. We are proud to be working with Empire and look forward to the impact their reputation will have on our organization as we continue to grow into other service areas throughout the U.S.,” said John T. Golle, Chairman and CEO of Safe Lites. “Highway and construction zones are some of the most dangerous work environments in America, particularly as more of this work moves to the night time. Each year too many workers are injured and killed. We look forward to working with Empire to better protect the workers and their equipment in the Southwest, Empire’s main trade area.”

“Empire’s 55-year partnership with construction, mining and agriculture professionals
has always been about helping customers get their work done efficiently and safely,” remarked Jeff Whiteman, Empire Southwest president and CEO. “Providing Safe Lites products is a natural extension of that focus — we want to make sure our customers return home safely every night after work. We are excited about this opportunity to help our customers protect their people, vehicles and machines.”

This announcement follows President Bush’s signing into law the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Act of 2005.  Section 1408, “Worker Injury Prevention and Free Flow of Vehicular Traffic” gives the Secretary of Transportation one year to implement the mandatory use of high-visibility garments by all workers, “on, or in close proximity to, a Federal-aid highway.”
